Why Every Boater Should Consider a Sea Tow Membership

One of the topics I discuss with nearly every student at Miami Boating Lessons is boating preparedness. We spend a lot of time talking about safety gear, navigation, weather, and emergency procedures, but there is another item that I believe belongs on every boater's checklist: a towing membership. Many boaters think of towing services as something they'll never need. I used to think the same thing—until I experienced firsthand how valuable a membership can be.
A Lesson Learned 10 Miles Offshore
Many years ago, I was out on the water enjoying a beautiful day offshore. The boat I was running at the time was powered by an older two-stroke outboard engine. Unlike modern four-stroke engines, two-strokes consume oil as part of their normal operation.
We were about 10 miles from land when a low-oil warning alarm suddenly sounded.
At first, it didn't seem like a major issue. Then reality set in. We checked our supplies and quickly realized we had made a critical mistake: we didn't have any spare oil onboard.
Being 10 miles offshore with an engine that needed oil wasn't a situation we wanted to ignore. Running the engine without adequate lubrication could have caused serious damage and potentially left us stranded.
Fortunately, we were Sea Tow Gold members. Instead of worrying about how we would get back to shore or arranging an expensive emergency service call, we simply contacted Sea Tow. They coordinated the delivery of the oil we needed directly to our location. We only paid for the oil itself—the delivery service was included as part of our membership. Within a short time, we were back underway and able to safely continue our trip.
Sea Tow Is More Than Just Towing
Many boaters assume Sea Tow is only there when your engine quits and you need a tow back to the marina. While towing is certainly one of their most valuable services, the membership provides much more than that.
In situations like ours, Sea Tow can often deliver essential supplies and parts directly to your vessel. Whether it's oil, a replacement component, fuel, or another critical item, having access to assistance on the water can save a boating trip and help prevent a minor issue from becoming a major emergency.
Of course, members are responsible for paying for the parts or supplies themselves, but the delivery and assistance can be covered under membership benefits depending on the situation and membership level.
Peace of Mind Is Worth It
Boating is supposed to be enjoyable. The last thing anyone wants is to spend a day on the water worrying about what could go wrong.
A Sea Tow membership provides something that's difficult to put a price on: peace of mind.
Whether you're dealing with a dead battery, mechanical failure, fuel issue, grounding, or simply need assistance getting a critical part delivered, it's comforting to know that help is only a phone call away.
Over the years, I've seen countless situations where a towing membership saved boaters hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars in unexpected expenses.
Preparation Is Part of Safe Boating
At Miami Boating Lessons, we teach our students that safe boating is about preparation. Carrying the proper safety equipment, maintaining your vessel, monitoring the weather, and having a plan for emergencies are all part of being a responsible captain.
A towing membership should be part of that plan. Even the most experienced boaters encounter unexpected situations. Having professional assistance available when you need it can make all the difference.
